Vereshchagino, Vereshchaginsky District, Perm Krai

Wereschtschagino (Russian Верещагино, scientific transliteration Vereščagino ) is a Russian city with 22 156 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ) in the Perm region. It is located in the foothills of the Ural Mountains, 137 km west of the regional capital Perm. Nearest towns are Otschor (20 km south of Wereschtschagino ) and Nytwa (42 km east).

History

Wereschtschagino was founded in 1898 during the construction of the railway line Vyatka Perm, a stretch of the Trans-Siberian Railway. By 1904, the settlement was called Otschorskaja ( Очёрская ) after the river Otschor, 1904-1915 Wosnessenskaja ( Вознесенская ). Then it was renamed in honor of the war painter Vasily Vereshchagin, 1904 on the way to the scenes of the Russian -Japanese War made ​​a stop here.

1942 was granted the city rights Wereschtschagino.
