Vergelegen

The South African wine estate Vergelegen ( Afrikaans / Dutch, German " Remote " ) is located about four kilometers northeast of Somerset West and about 50 km east of Cape Town.

The winery was founded by Willem Adriaan van der Stel, who had succeeded his father as governor in 1699. Visited in the mid- 1990s by the British Queen Elizabeth II

The manor house of the estate was opened in 1701 and is one of the oldest manor houses at the foot of the Hottentots Holland Mountains and on the River Lourens. The farmhouse is typical of the Cape Dutch architectural style: the roof is thatched, the rooms are generously equipped with teak and Yellow wood.
