Together cooperate around 40 transport companies. He is with an area of 30,367 km ² of area largest public transport network in Germany and one of the largest transportation networks in Europe. With 1024 lines 12,544 stops and stations are approached. It run regional trains on a 3251 km long railway network. Around 3.54 million passengers are carried in the network area daily, which has 5.8 million inhabitants.

For 2012, the following operating figures were announced for the VBB:

  • Line length after transport Bus 27,532 km
  • Tram 502 km
  • Subway 146 km
  • S -Bahn 556 km
  • Regional traffic 3251 km

Tasks

The VBB guaranteed in the public transport (PT ) uniform traffic structure with multi-modal and charges that apply in any means of transport, which is part of a co-operating with the VBB companies. The composite tariff provides for a uniform tariff structure with a ticket, a uniform range of tickets and uniform conditions of carriage and uniform passenger information. Lines, timetables and interchanges are coordinated within the composite area. On behalf of the two states of Berlin and Brandenburg the VBB also writes from local transport services mainly for rail transport ( regional rail ).

Quality Management

Through a review of the completed 2007 Quality VBB reports comprehensively on traffic quality in the network area. Here, the quality control is carried out with the essential criteria state of infrastructure, passenger information and customer satisfaction. This is influenced among other things by punctuality, which stood at 89.6 percent. Although this was a slight improvement over 2006, this value was still considered unsatisfactory. Trust in the power supply is important for customers. In 2007 there were, however, due to strikes an approximate doubling of the default rate to 2.8 per cent of revenues. The cleanliness was determined that the vandalism problem in the network area is exceptionally large. In the infrastructure, especially the condition of the road network, for example with regard to speed restrictions that negatively affect the travel times, checked. To this end, in addition, a separate network state report is created. It was found that in 2008 the share of route length, which were affected by speed restrictions had reduced to 12 per cent. Of this improvement, however, almost only the main routes had benefited, where this share was 9 percent ( branch lines: 18 percent). In the passenger information only 26 percent of the stations could be certified at least good range of information.

An important aid in the analysis are the quality since June 2005, existing quality scouts. Around 350 volunteer users of public transport have written around 4400 positive and negative individual observations in the VBB - space in the first two years of the project. Employees of the VBB access these instructions and initiate further steps and measures.

Tenders in rail transport

Since 2002, the Transport Association Berlin-Brandenburg writes reinforced subnets of the Berlin-Brandenburg rail network ( regional transport) from, sometimes in collaboration with other transport associations such as the transport association Upper Lusatia-Lower Silesia ( ZVON ).

The prizes usually line bundle, such as the " Spree- Neisse - network " (train regional transport lines 46, 60V, 64, 65) or "Diesel Power East" (lines 25, 36, 60, 63 ). Here, however, all tenders limited to 2012 so far only on former regional rail lines, profitable and heavily used regional express lines previously operated by DB Regio, a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn. A traffic contract completed in 2002 between German railway and the states of Berlin and Brandenburg assured that the regional express lines may be tendered only after 2012; This is criticized despite the legal issue, both experts as well as private transport companies.

In October 2008, the VBB started with 16 routes the largest tender in Berlin- Brandenburg. The routes are divided into four lots, for example, form the lines 1, 11, 13, 20, 21, 22, 23 the lot 1 To break the existing monopoly of DB Regio, the VBB has determined that it is not possible that a candidate 's two largest lots ( 1 and 2) wins together. The German railway planned under this provision to file a complaint with the Procurement Chamber. After the tender has been established that the German railway Lot 1 and Lot 3 is replaced by (RE1, RE7, RE9, RE11, RB13, RB14, RB20, RB21, RB22, RB23, RB24 ) and the ODEG lots 2 and 4 ( RE2, RE4, RB33, RB35, RB51 ).

With the performed since 2002 tenders also increasingly private railway transport companies operating in both countries, including for example, the East German Railways ( ODEG ), the Niederbarnimer Railway (NEB ) or Prignitzer Railway (PEG).
