History

The history of the VRN dates back to the post-war period. Against the backdrop of difficult economic conditions in the cut by the boundaries of the zones of occupation region first transnational contacts established under the founded in 1951 "Municipal Association Rhein- Neckar ". In 1970 that emerged from Raumordnungsverband Rhein- Neckar soon presented plans to create a transnational transport system as well as a powerful S-Bahn system.

In 1973, the cities Mannheim, Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg jointly with Federal Railways and the Federal Post " Community transport Rhein-Neckar ", which can be considered a first precursor of the VRN. In the following years developed specific implementation concepts for an S -Bahn. During their implementation was progressing with difficulty, the state governments of Baden- Württemberg and Rhineland -Palatinate brought the establishment of a full-fledged transport and tariff association in 1981 in a vital way.

So in the 80 years first transition rates between the various transport companies emerged. The introduced in 1985 Riedbahn transition tariff allowed, for example, passengers on the Riedbahn route to Mannheim, the subsequent use of the Mannheim tram with the same ticket. Also between the UEL and the trams in Heidelberg and Mannheim existed Community tariffs. Another step towards the overarching network was implemented with the introduced on 16 December 1985 Community tariff for season tickets (GFZ ). On 1 December 1989 it finally emerged with the establishment of the transport association Rhein- Neckar (VRN ) the long-awaited, fully integrated with the substantially unchanged to the present day common fare system.

On 1 April 2003, the VRN has been extended to the area of the Main- Tauber -Kreis. On June 1, 2006 saw the eleven so far in Westpfalz Transport Association ( Warsaw Transport Authority ) combined transport companies at the VRN, the pay scale was thus extended to the entire Palatinate.
