Verlyn Flieger

Verlyn Flieger ( born 1933 ) is an author, editor and professor in the Department of English at the University of Maryland at College Park. She specializes in comparative mythology and modern fantasy, especially the works of JRR Tolkien.

Life

1972 flyer got the conclusion as M. A. and made 1977 the Ph.D. at the Catholic University of America and has worked since 1976 at the University of Maryland.

Her most famous books are Splintered Light: Logos and Language in Tolkien 's World ( 1983, revised edition 2002); A Question of Time: JRR Tolkien 's Road to Faerie, for which she got the Mythopoeic Award in 1998 for studies of the Inklings, and Interrupted Music: The Making of Tolkien 's Mythology ( 2005).

She won the Mythopoeic Award for Inklings Studies of Tolkien 's legendarium again in 2002 for: Essays on The History of Middle -earth, a book that she edited together with Carl Hostetter. She received several awards for their excellent teaching skills as a high school teacher.

Flyer also wrote fantasy for young adults, the book Pig Tale, and short stories.

Along with Douglas A. Anderson, Michael DC Drout and she is editor of the journal Tolkien Studies: An Annual Scholarly Review, ( Volume 1, 2004; Volume 2, 2005, and Volume 3, 2006).
