VÄ“rmanes Garden

The Wöhrmannsche garden, also: Wöhrmann garden or Wöhrmannscher Park, Latvian dārzs Vērmanes, is a park in the Latvian capital Riga.

The oldest public park in Riga was opened in 1817 and consisted of exotic trees, a rose garden and a restaurant. The idea for the creation of the park came from the Governor General of Livonia, Philip Paulucci. The avenues of the park were planned and planted by the gardener Johann Hermann Zigra. The Prussian General Johann Christoph Wöhrmann (1784-1843) and his mother Anna supported the construction financially. In her honor, a granite obelisk was founded in 1829 in the park. 1881 Park of Georg Kuphaldt was significantly expanded.
