Vermilion Parish, Louisiana
The Vermilion Parish (French: Paroisse de Vermilion ) is a parish located in the state of Louisiana in the United States. In the census in 2010, the Parish had 57 999 inhabitants and a population density of 19.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( Parish Seat) is Abbeville.
Geography
The Parish is located in southern Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 3984 square kilometers, of which 944 square kilometers are water surface.
The major waterways of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway along the coast and the Vermilion River.

History
The Vermilion Parish was formed in 1844 from parts of Lafayette Parish.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Vermilion Parish 53 807 people in 19,832 households and 14,457 families. The population density was 18 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 82.68 percent White, 14.17 percent Black or African American, 0.30 percent Native American, 1.82 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander, and 0.26 percent from other races groups; 0.76 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.38 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race, were members of the various groups mentioned.
Of the 19,832 households out of which 37.1 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.5 percent were married couples living together, 13.0 percent were single mothers, 27.1 percent were non-families, 23.1 percent of all households and 10.9 percent lived in people aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.16 persons.
In relation to the parish the population was spread out 28.1 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.4 percent between 18 and 24 years, 28.2 percent between 25 and 44 years, 20.8 percent between 45 and 64 years and 13.5 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males.
The median income for a household was $ 29,500, and the median income for a family was $ 36,093. Males have a median income of $ 31,044, women $ 18,710. The per capita income was $ 14,201. 17.4 percent of families and 22.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 30.0 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 21.4 percent of those 65 years.
