Vernole

Vernole is a Southeast Italian municipality ( comune ) with 7236 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Lecce in Puglia. The word Vernole can be of " vero " and " olio " deduce what in German means " a lot " or " pure " oil. The community is located about 13.5 kilometers southeast of Lecce directly on the Adriatic Sea in southern Salento.

On 26 July, the Vernolesi celebrate the patron saint Anna. It takes place on this day instead of a large procession, participate almost all villagers from. There a man-sized statue is then paraded through the streets and alleys Vernoles. That evening, a funfair and a concert will take place, the concert at the Piazza ( square) of the village and the fair part in Vernole and partly just outside.

In Vernole there is a church and three chapels, two within the town and one outside the cemetery.

Economy

Below the square is an old oil mill, which was operated earlier. Today, the olives are brought to outlying mill for grinding. Vernole living from olive oil production, but also from tourism, as it is located only seven kilometers far from the sea.

History

Vernole is first mentioned in 1115. During the feudal period the place was virtually meaningless. 1961 escalated a conflict in the population than the end of 1960, because of the electoral system at a municipal election to penalize citizens list.
