Vernon Heywood

Vernon Hilton Heywood ( born December 24, 1927) is a British biologist and botanist. Heywood has worked in the field of taxonomy and systematics. He is the first to describe numerous species of plants.

He distinguished himself particularly in the field of medicinally useful and essential oils containing plant and dedicated to the preservation of wild varieties of crops. To this end, he explores ways to preserve the genetic material of endangered plants.

Heywood is involved in numerous initiatives to conserve biodiversity or has initiated, such as the global network of botanical gardens Network Botanic Gardens Conservation International ( BGCI ). He was coordinator of the UNEP Global Biodiversity Assessment.

He is (2009 ) Professor Emeritus of the University of Reading in England. He taught botany and there was the head of the botanical garden. He was president of the International Council for medicinal and aromatic plants (International Council for Medicinal and Aromatic Plants ).

Awards

Heywood was 1987, the Linnean Medal of the Linnean Society of London. Planta Europa awarded him with their fifth Conference 2007 in Cluj- Napoca ( Cluj ) with her award Linnaeus. The book Taxonomy and Plant Conservation (Cambridge University Press, 2006, publisher Etelka Leadlay and Stephen Jury) was dedicated Heywood on the occasion of his 75th birthday.
