Veronese Easter

The Pasque Veronesi ( " Veronese Easter" ) were a collection of Verona against the French occupation in 1797. They lasted from 17 April, Easter Monday, to 25 April, the day of St. Mark the Evangelist, the patron saint of the Venetian Republic.

The Pasque Veronesi ended with the defeat of the insurgents. Result was in addition to the execution of the leaders and the payment of substantial damages sums the looting Verona heritage, as well as the destruction of all characters Veronese or Venetian rule. Under the booty included not only grave stones from the Roman period, but also manuscripts and medieval manuscripts from seven centuries, and paintings by such renowned artists such as Titian and Paolo Veronese.

The Pasque Veronesi are often compared to the Sicilian Vespers, but obtained as a result of its failure never its popularity.
