Veronese Riddle

The Veronese Puzzles (Italian indovinello Veronese ) is a mystery in Italo- Romance-language in a manuscript in the Biblioteca Capitular di Verona. The text in younger Roman Italic from the 8th or 9th century is sometimes led since the discovery and publication by Luigi Schiaparelli in 1924, as the oldest example of a text in Italian.

Explanation

The language of the text is spoken in the Early Middle Ages Italoromanisch. The interpretation of the text that was written without punctuation and word separation is, with respect to the initial problem: Here is unclear whether se goes back to Latin or Latin sic sibi and whether pareba has parare Latin or Latin parere. The remaining words are less problematic. The * versorium on vulgar Latin declining versorio ( reversible plow ) is the dialect word versor in modern dialects of Veneto.

About the precise temporal and spatial coordination of the text can only be speculated lack of comparative texts. The text could have been written around the year 800 in Verona by a Latin knowledgeable monk. With the rest of the manuscript he has no connection.
