Versonnex (Ain)

Versonnex is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Versonnex is located on 479 m above sea level. M., five kilometers southeast of Gex and about twelve kilometers north of the city of Geneva (air line). This former farm extends in the Pays de Gex, on Oudar, in the plain at Jurafuß, in the northern part of the Geneva basin, near the border with Switzerland.

The area of ​​5.89 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Pays de Gex. The area is drained by the Oudar and its right tributary Lilette, both of which flow through open lowlands. East of the village flows the Oudar in the Versoix, which forms the border with Switzerland. History

Is first mentioned Versonnex in 1200 under the name Versenay. Over time, the spelling on Versenai ( 1234), de Versenayco ( 1279 ), Versonay (1300) and Versonex ( 1528) transformed to the present name Versonnex occupied writing since 1697.

In the Middle Ages Versonnex was the property of the lords of Gex. Along with this rule came the village in the 14th century the Counts of Savoy. Then Versonnex shared the checkered history of the Pays de Gex, with which it finally reached in 1601 after the Treaty of Lyon in France.

The original Gothic parish church Saint -Martin was remodeled in the 17th and 19th centuries.

Population

With 2130 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Versonnex one of the smaller communities of the department of Ain. After the population had decreased in the first half of the 20th century, a striking population growth was recorded since the early 1970s again.
