Verteuil-sur-Charente

Verteuil -sur -Charente is a commune with 603 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Charente in the Poitou -Charentes; it belongs to the district Confolens and Canton Ruffec.

History

Verteuil belonged at least since the 12th century to the possession of La Rochefoucauld. 1567 the fifth synod of the French Protestants took place here. As a church Verteuil 1793 was created. 1801 to 1926 belonged to the district Verteuil Ruffec, after its dissolution, it belonged to the district Angoulême, and since the administrative reform of 2008, it is part of the District Confolens. In the second half of the 19th century Verteuil lost about a third of its population. From 1339 in 1846 to 888 in 1901 In the 20th century, the number reduced by a further 20 per cent to just over 700 today in 1962 changed the community its name to Verteuil -sur- Charente.
