Vesancy

Vesancy is a commune in the French department of Ain, in the Rhône -Alpes.

Geography

Vesancy is located on 660 m above sea level. M., three kilometers north-east of Gex and about 16 kilometers north of the city of Geneva (air line). This former farm extends in the Pays de Gex: a scenic elevated location at the foot of the Jura Mountains, on the northern edge of the lake basin.

The area of ​​10.70 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Pays de Gex. The southern part of the municipality is occupied by a vast basin that lies between the Jura mountains and the upstream Mont Mourex ( 754 m above sea level. M. ) and is drained by the Oudar south to Versoix. To the north, the municipality's area on the slightly sloping and planted with meadow land slope of Vesancy and the densely wooded escarpment extends, on which the clearing La Vesancière is up on the broad crest of the Jura. On the Jura ridge is 1503 m above sea level. M. reached the highest elevation of Vesancy. History

Is first mentioned Vesancy shortly before the year 1200 under the name Vizencie. Over the centuries, the spelling changed over Vissencie ( 1297 ), Visencier ( 1298 ), Visenciez ( 1526), Vesanci ( 1589 ) and Vesency ( 1730) to the present Vesancy (1734 documentary evidence ). The place name probably goes back to the Gallo-Roman personal name Vicentius.

Since the Middle Ages Vesancy formed a small government that came to the Counts of Savoy to 1292. From the 14th century the city told the eventful history of Gex.

Attractions

The parish church of Saint -Christophe in 1846 built on the site of an earlier church. In the village center which originated in the 12th century castle stands with its towers, which today serves as the seat of the municipal administration. On a promontory above the village is the Chapelle de Riamont, which was built in 1868.

Population

With 529 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Vesancy one of the small communities of the department of Ain. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century, a continuous population growth was recorded since the early 1970s again. Outside the old town center, numerous new single-family homes were built.

Economy and infrastructure
