Vesc

Vesc is a commune of 285 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Rhône-Alpes region in the Drome region; it belongs to the canton in the arrondissement of Nyons Dieulefit.

Geography

Vesc is on an average height of 655 meters above sea level in the south of the Drôme Provençale, 11 km east of Dieulefit and 38 kilometers east of Montelimar. The nearest communities are Crupies, Montjoux and Orcinas.

History

The earliest recorded mention as Vaiesch found in 1173rd Today's spelling Vesc is occupied from 1781. The name derives from the French word over Vesque évêque to German: "Bishop ".

In the Middle Ages was in place a monastery - a branch of the Benedictine foundation of Cruas in the department of Ardèche. What is the position of the place was once, like the fact testify that the local pharmacy at the time had a national reputation. The church, dedicated to St. Peter, was originally part of the monastery complex.
