Vesoul

Vesoul is a commune in the region of Franche -Comté. It is the main city (prefecture) of the Haute -Saône.

Geography

The town with 15,623 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) is located on the old railway line that runs from Paris to Troyes to Mulhouse and on to Basel. The Route nationale N19 from Paris to Basel via Vesoul.

By Vesoul flow of Durgeon, a tributary of the Saône, and Colombine, which opens at Vesoul in the Durgeon. West of the city, on the territory of the municipality Vaivre -et- Montoille, lake " Lac de Vesoul -Vaivre ".

Economy

In Vesoul is one of the factories of the PSA automobile plants, the 4,500 employees busy, making it one of the largest employers in the Haute- Saône.

Vesoul has since 1964 been twinned with the German city of Gerlingen in Baden-Württemberg.

  • Simon Renard (1513-1573) was born in Vesoul. He was an advisor of the Emperor Charles V.. , From whom the town hall with its hexagonal tower and gargoyles.

  • Édouard Belin (1876-1963), born in Vesoul. He invented the Belinographen, with which one could transmit pictures by means of a telegraph.
  • Edwige Feuillère (1907-1998), born in Vesoul. She was an actress.
  • Jacques Brel (1929-1978) immortalized the city in his Chanson Vesoul.
