Vesterbro, Copenhagen

Vesterbro (from Danish: " vester brolagt vej " - " western paved road " ) is a district of Copenhagen, Denmark and is one of the four historic suburban neighborhoods ( Brokvarterer ) that surround the city center.

Location

Vesterbro is located west of downtown. The neighboring districts are Kongens Enghave in the south- west, Valby in the west and the municipality of Frederiksberg in the north.

History

The name " Vesterbro " originally referred to a road that led from the west into the city. Up to a cholera epidemic in 1853 only a few buildings before the city walls were approved, so that by 1780 about 1,000 people lived in the area. After the epidemic of the ban was lifted and the area for residential and industrial buildings used. The name of the road was used for the entire area and the road renamed " Vesterbrogade ".

Vesterbro was the working-class neighborhood near downtown. Here is the butcher quarter Kødbyen, the Carlsberg Brewery and the main train station, in whose environment is the red light district. The district is located in a transformation process towards the students and bar district, especially in the Istedgade.

With the Carlsberg Hovedkontor, Kongens Bryghus and the SAS Royal Hotel there are three of the eight tallest skyscrapers in Denmark in the quarter.

Traffic

The main thoroughfare is the Vesterbrogade. The road begins in the east at the City Hall Square, leads past the Tivoli, the SAS Royal Hotel and the main railway station, the western end of the quarter, the transition to the district of Valby.

The central station is connected to the local and long distance traffic of the Danish State Railways and to the S -tog system.
