Vestfjarðagöng

The Vestfjarðargöng, rarely also called Breiðadals -og - Botnsheiðar Tunnel is a road tunnel in the Icelandic West Fjords on Vestfjarðarvegur ( Road No. 60). It crosses the Botnsheiði and Breiðadalsheiði and thus connects Isafjordur, respectively. Suðureyri on Súgandafjörður with the southern West Fjords and thus the rest of Iceland. The tunnel was created from 1991-1995 and 1996 to traffic. With a length of 9120 meters of Vestfarðargöng is the longest tunnel in Iceland. However, this length can not be run through the piece, because the tunnel has a special feature. Crossing it the Breiðadalsheiði - - From the southwest Coming divides the tunnel by 4150 meters in two tubes at: The north tube ( 2907 meters) crosses under the Botnsheiði and leads into the Súgandafjörður, the eastern tube ( 2103 meters) leads to Isafjordur. Only this portion is expanded two-track, the other two sections are single track ( with crossing islands).

The tunnel replaced the not weather and not safe winter road across the BOTNS and the Breiðadalsheiði.

On the other side of Isafjordur is the oldest and shortest tunnel Arnarnessgöng Islands.
