Veterans Stadium

The Veterans Stadium was a stadium in South Philadelphia Sports Complex Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The stadium belonged to the city of Philadelphia and was used from 1971 to 2003 from MLB team Philadelphia Phillies and 1971 to 2002 from the same NFL team Philadelphia Eagles as homestead.

History

10 years after the departure of the Philadelphia Athletics, and for fear of losing another professional team, the citizens of Philadelphia in 1964 approved $ 25 million to replace the dilapidated Shibe Park and the Franklin Field. The building had to be in 1967 confirmed once again at the polls because of budget overruns. With a total cost of $ 50 million, it was one of the most expensive stadiums at this time. In 1968 the stadium was designated by the City Council to honor the veterans of all wars in Veterans Stadium.

The Phillies played their first game at Veterans Stadium on April 10 in 1971 and won before 55,352 spectators against the Montreal Expos 4-1.

The last football game at Veterans Stadium took place on 19 January 2003. The Eagles lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with 10-27. In August 2003, the Eagles moved into the newly built Lincoln Financial Field. The last match at the stadium had the Phillies, who lost on 28 September 2003 against the Atlanta Braves 2-5. Since 2004, the Phillies now play in Citizens Bank Park, a pure baseball stadium, which was built 400 meters east of the Veterans Stadium.

Stage began with the demolition of Veterans On March 21, 2004. Today there are parking spaces on the site. On 6 June 2005, the anniversary of D-Day of World War II, was a plaque and a monument at the spot where stood the stadium formerly inaugurated.
