Vetigastropoda
Tegula pulligo
The Vetigastropoda are a superorder of the subclass Orthogastropoda within the auger. Known groups of Vetigastropoda are the slot tape worm ( Pleurotomariidae ) and abalone ( Haliotidae ).
Definition
Ponder and Lindberg (1997) lists six apomorphic features of Vetigastropoda justifying the monophyly of the group:
- Epipodiale sense organs
- Papillate tentacles
- Digestive glands
- Location of kidney
- Several Statokonien ( parts of the organs of balance )
- Presence of specific gill pouch ( Bursikel )
System
The scope and the number of superfamilies within the Vetigastropoda is not yet secured. Bouchet and Rocroi list About 12 families and three families that they could be assigned to any of the superfamilies.
