Vettor Pisani

Vettor Pisani (* 1324, † 1380 ) was a Venetian admiral.

In 1378 he commanded the Venetian fleet at the Battle of Anzio, where he defeated the Genoese. Then he conquered Cattaro, Sebenico and Arbe, which had been occupied by the allied with Genoa Hungary. In May 1379 Pisani defeated the Genoese in the naval battle of Pola, which is why he was cast in his home town jail. When the Genoese threatened in the War of Chioggia Venice, the people demanded his release.

In February 1380 he defeated the Genoese fleet Luciano Doria in the channel of Brontolo and then captured back in June after heavy fighting Chioggia. Pisani, thereby founding Venetian supremacy in the Mediterranean. He died in 1380 from an illness and was buried with full honors in the church of S. Antonio in Venice.

Centuries later, Napoleon's troops ravaged the church, which is why his grave today is in the church of SS Giovanni e Paolo.

His statue is No. 14 on the Prato della Valle, Padua.
