Veyrier

Veyrier is a municipality in the canton of Geneva in Switzerland.

Geography

The community is located directly at the foot of Salève. A special feature is the state border, France and Switzerland, which cuts in half the original settlement. The place on the French side ( Pas de l' Echelle ) is politically part of the community Étrembières. Originally coined agricultural, Veyrier was almost totally urbanized in the last thirty years, the majority of farms went on as building land. The historic center has been preserved.

The valley station of the cable car to the Salève ( 1,097 m above sea level. M. ) is already in France. The Salève with the almost perpendicular cliff rising from the level of the Geneva mountain excursion. Europe's first electric cog railway ( Chemin de Fer du Salève ) since 1899 by the French Pas de l' Echelle from driving on the Salève and in 1932 was replaced by the cable car, which also was considered a technical sensation at the opening. The former route of the old cog railway has now been destroyed by a large quarry at the foot of Salève. Until after the Second World War also drove a tram from Geneva to Veyrier.

History

1125 was the County of Savoy seen from the county Vienne and was elevated by Emperor Sigismund in 1416 the Duchy to the counted and the area of ​​the present town of Veyrier. Pierre -Claude de la Fléchère reached in 1770 the collection of his possessions to the county Veyrier. He left the Chateau de Veyrier building, which is today in the French Pas de l' Echelle, and renovate the church. This is now at the center of the Swiss village. De la Fléchère also left the first bridge over the Arve, the main tributary of the Rhone build south of Geneva and was one of the main sponsors of the establishment of the City of Carouge. De la Fléchère died in 1790 and is buried in the village church of today Veyrier. The altar mosaic of St. Mauritius was added in the 19th century.

1816 was the subject territories and former French and Savoyard territories ( including the county Veyrier and the City of Carouge ), the Republic of Geneva formed the Congress of Vienna from the city of Geneva, which in turn joined the Switzerland as the new canton.
