Via Salaria

The Via Salaria is an ancient salt road that led from northern Italy through the territory of Lazio, where Rome is located to Central Italy. Today, it is incorporated as SS 4 in the Italian highway network.

History

During the period of Etruscan domination she secured Rome's de facto monopoly on salt and was a source of wealth of the city. During the conflict with the Sabines it was interrupted, resulting in severe economic problems in Rome. The Via Salaria is one of the oldest trade routes in Italy from the period around 400 BC

The Via Salaria led from Rome to the Adriatic at Castrum Truentinum. One of the most important Roman bridges along the way was the Ponte Salario Aniene.
