VIA Technologies

VIA Technologies, briefly VIA (Very Innovative Architecture) (Chinese威盛 电子 股份有限公司, short chinese威盛 电子, Pinyin Weisheng Dianzi ), is a Taiwanese manufacturer that was known primarily chipsets. VIA's product portfolio even includes but other products:

  • PC processors
  • Graphics chips
  • Sound chips
  • Network chips
  • Controller chips
  • Motherboard

History

VIA Technologies was from Symphony Company in Silicon Valley in Fremont, CA (USA), Wen Chi Chen (陈文琦) founded in 1987 as part of the Formosa Plastics Group. Chen was before he joined Symphony, at Intel. In 1992, the company headquarters to start the chip production to Taipei ( Taiwan) was laid. 1999 bought the VIA CPU Cyrix and Centaur Technology Companies. Along with Sonic Blue 2001 formed a joint venture S3 Graphics.

The technology of these firms enabled VIA the development of energy-efficient EPIA motherboards in the mini -ITX format, which ran with its own processor in the range of 1-1.5 GHz and can be passively cooled as they have a power dissipation of less than 7 watts. These components VIA made a name in the years 2003 /2004. Due to the small size and low power consumption, these motherboards are ideal for use as a multimedia PC in a barebones or Shuttle housing.

VIA was dismantled in the wake of Canaan project into a number of companies. The following companies are subsidiaries of VIA Technologies:

  • Centaur Technology ( CPUs)
  • IC Ensemble ( sound chip )
  • VIA Embedded Solutions Division (EPIA platform etc. )
  • VIA Networking Technologies (LAN & WLAN chips)
  • VIA Optical Solution ( controller for optical drives)
  • VIA Telecom (chipsets for mobile phones)

In August 2008, VIA announced that it would withdraw from the area of chipsets for AMD and Intel processors. In this area you will now concentrate on its own processors C3 and C7.

On July 6, 2011 VIA finally announced all of its shares in the GPU manufacturers S3 for sale.
