Via Tiburtina

The Via Tiburtina ( " Tiburtian road ", and later: Via Tiburtina Valeria ) was a consular of the Roman Empire. Today the Via Tiburtina as state road 5 ( SS5 ) is an important part of the national trunk road network. It connects Rome with Pescara in the Abruzzo region.

It was built under the consul Valerius Maximus Markus to 286 BC and connected Rome with Tibur (now Tivoli).

The road led first to the temples in Tibur and was later used by the Roman aristocrats who had built their villas in Tibur.

Later, the road was extended to the area of Aequians and the Marsi, in order to control these areas better. It was then called Via Tiburtina Valeria, and led in less than 200 km above the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea by Aternum, now Pescara.
