History
The village already existed at the time of the Roman province of Lusitania and existed until the end of the Moorish rule. After his extensive destruction during the Reconquista in the 13th century it was repopulated by the Avisritter Gil Martins, who later became Grand Master of the Order of Christ. Was first officially mentioned Viana 1269th First City rights were granted by King D.Dinis Viana, which was built in 1313 around the same time a castle here. The pottery made especially from the 17th century to an economic boom in the town.

Traffic
Viana do Alentejo is a stop on the railway line Linha do Alentejo, the train station is just outside the town.
Locally, the national roads crossing 254, 257, 383, and 384, east of the Viana, 30 km Situated Portel and its port ( also European Route 802) is connected to the IP2.
