Viana, Luanda

Province

Viana is a town and municipality in the province of Luanda in Angola.

Covering an area of 1,344 square kilometers, about 15-30 miles east of Luanda's approximately 68,000 inhabitants of the city, which has become by the population growth of the whole region into a kind of suburb of Luanda. It has now in addition to the native Ambundu an unusually high concentration of Ovimbundu, which have moved away from the central highlands because of the civil war of 1097-2002. It is also home to about 6,000 long-term refugees, primarily from the Shaba Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Viana is about a 90 minute drive from downtown Luanda.

There are in the Estádio do Santos Viana, built in 2003. It has 17,000 seats and is used mainly for football matches. The city was founded on 13 December 1963, apart from the actual Viana also includes the villages of Barra do Kwanza Calumbo and Zango. Because of the proximity to the metropolis of Luanda Viana has experienced a very large increase in population and industry in recent years. Nearby is the new airport of Luanda, Angola to the International Airport, built by the Chinese company China International Fund.

Viana is the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Viana.
