Vicksburg is a small city in Kalamazoo County in the southwestern part of the U.S. state of Michigan. In 2000, Vicksburg had 2320 inhabitants.

Vicksburg has a high school (VHS Vicksburg High School ) and a middle school, plus some elementary schools. At Indian Lake, one of the slightly larger lakes in the area, is a residential area.

Geography

The Village is located east of U.S. Highway 131 almost completely within the Schoolcraft Township, but a small part extends into the Brady Township.

History

John Vickers, the namesake of the city, moved here 1831st He built a dam at Portage Creek and a sawmill. This was probably the first mill in the county and the dam produced the Sunset Lake, around which settled a number of settlers. Vickers died in 1842. Under the name of the Brady Village of the state of Michigan was registered on 18 October 1871 as a village, but a few days later the name was changed by a petition in Vicksburg.
