Victor Anatolyevich Vassiliev

Viktor Anatoljevich Vasilyev, Russian Виктор Анатольевич Васильев ( Viktor Vassiliev, English transliteration Victor Vassiliev; born April 10, 1956 in Moscow ) is a Russian mathematician who is best known for his discovery of Vassiliev invariants in knot theory.

Life and work

Vasilyev made in 1981 graduated from the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics of Moscow State University ( Moscow). 1981 to 1987 he was a scientist at the Research Institute for documents and archives in Moscow and part -time math teacher at a high school ( with specialization in mathematics). In 1982 he earned his doctorate under Vladimir Arnold and received the 1992 candidate status ( doctor called ). 1987 to 1989 he was at the Research Institute for statistical information systems, 1989/90 at the Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and from 1990 to 1995 a senior scientist at the Research Institute for System Studies. Since 1991 he is professor at the Independent University of Moscow, where he leads a research seminar since 1997. He is also, since 1997, Steklov Institute of Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He has been a visiting professor at the University of Paris VII, at the Mathematical Science Research Institute ( MSRI ) at Berkeley University and at Trinity College, Cambridge.

He is best known as the discoverer of Vassiliev invariants of knots, which include many previously discovered polynomial invariants. It is an open question whether they include all knot invariants. He also works in singularity theory, partial differential equations ( geometry of wave fronts ), complexity theory, integral geometry, function theory, combinatorics, Picard - Lefschetz theory.

Vasilyev is ( corresponding member since 1997) since 2003 Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. He is co-editor of the journal Functional Analysis and its Applications and the Council of the Moscow Mathematical Society. In 1994 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich ( plenary lecture: Topology of Discriminants and Their Complements ). In 1985 he was awarded the prize of the Moscow Mathematical Society.

On February 21, 2014 Vasilyev was arrested along with other protest participants against the Bolotnaya trial in Moscow. On March 5, 2014, he was - sentenced to a fine of 10,000 rubles for "resisting the police " - as the others.
