Victor Goldschmidt (philosopher)

Victor Goldschmidt ( born September 28, 1914 in Berlin, † 25 September 1981) was a French philosopher of German origin.

Life

Victor Goldschmidt was born as the youngest child of the legal scholar James Paul Goldschmidt (1874-1940) in Berlin. In the 1930s, he emigrated to France, where he earned a degree in philosophy. He taught as a professor history of philosophy at various French universities, from 1956 to 1966 at the University of Rennes, from 1966 to 1976 at the University of Clermont- Ferrand and most recently at the University of Amiens.

Work

Goldschmidt's research focus was primarily on Plato and Platonism, which he has authored numerous publications, besides also to Rousseau, Montesquieu and others. In 1984 a collection of his essays a commemorative volume was published in two volumes in 1985 under the title Histoire et structure contributed by his colleagues and students.
