Victor Lewis

Victor Lewis ( born May 20, 1950 in Omaha, Nebraska) is an American jazz drummer.

Hailing from a musical family, Lewis - his father was a saxophonist, his mother a pianist and singer - began at the age of ten years, a cello training, but soon moved to drums; in addition he also studied classical piano. At the age of fifteen, he began professionally performing in Omaha, including he also accompanied Hank Crawford. He then studied classical percussion at the University of Nebraska.

In 1974 he went to New York City. At his first gig with the band of Buster Williams, he met Woody Shaw, whose band he joined a few months later and with his album The Moon Trane he had his recording debut; it was followed by numerous other recordings. In addition, working with musicians such as Joe Farrell, Earl Klugh, Hubert Laws, Carla Bley and David Sanborn. With Sanborn he played his first own compositions - a Seventh Avenue and Sophisticated Squaw ( Agaya ).

1980 Lewis left Shaw's band and joined the group of Stan Getz on which he served until his death in 1991. With him he took on several albums and videos. He also worked in the late 1980s with artists such as Kenny Barron, Art Farmer, JJ Johnson, Mike Stern, John Stubblefield, Grover Washington Jr., The Manhattan Jazz Quintet, as well as Bobby Hutcherson and was involved in the performance of Charles Mingus ' Epitaph.

With Bobby Watson, he led the group Horinzon, with which he appeared, and among others the world the album Present Tense grossed. In 1991, he appeared as a guest musician with the album Underground of wind ensembles Twenty- Ninth Street Saxophone Quartet. He is also a member of the Kenny Barron Quintet since its inception, played a recording with musicians such as Gary Bartz, Eddie Henderson, Johnny Griffin, Janis Siegel, Larry Willis, John Hicks and Abbey Lincoln and took Fred Lipsius an educational teaching jazz album. Since 2003 he has taught at Rutgers University in New Brunswick Jazz drums.
