Victoria Cougars

The Victoria Cougars were a professional ice hockey team in Victoria, British Columbia. Founded in 1911, the team was renamed under the name Victoria Senators and after two years in Victoria Aristocrats. The Cougars are the last Stanley Cup winner, who did not come from the National Hockey League.

History

In 1911 the team of the Victoria Senators was founded and played in the PCHA together, each with a team of Vancouver and New Westminster. As early as 1913 they named the team in Victoria Aristocrats order. Under a new name, the team immediately caused a stir. They wanted against the reigning Stanley Cup winners, the Quebec Bulldogs and compete to win the Cup, but the series was not recognized as an official series. Among other things there were in the different leagues have different rules. Game one and three were played by the rules of the PCHA with seven players and both times were the Aristocrats as the winner of the ice. The Bulldogs were successful only in the second game, which was denied by the rules of the National Hockey Association with only six players. As the stadium the Aristocrats in 1916 occupied by the Canadian military they moved across the border to the United States to Spokane. There they played a year as Spokane Canaries before the team was disbanded.

Already in 1918 was started as Victoria Aristocrats a new beginning. In 1922, the team named then into Victoria Cougars. 1924, the PCHA was dissolved and the Cougars played henceforth in the Western Canada Hockey League ( WCHL ). Lester Patrick led the team and led it in 1925 in the Stanley Cup Finals. After the best team in the NHL season, the Hamilton Tigers on strike the playoffs, the Montreal Canadiens came as a representative. In the domestic arena Patrick the Cougars won the series 3-1 and were the last team outside the NHL who could win the Stanley Cup.
