Victoria Cup (ice hockey)

The Victoria Cup is an ice hockey competition, which is played every year since 2008 between winners of the European Champions Hockey League and a representative of the North American National Hockey League. The competition was launched by the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF for their 100th anniversary in life.

Named the trophy after the Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal, Canada. The stadium is regarded as the birthplace of ice hockey since 1875 there took place an indoor ice hockey game for the first time.

After failure of the CHL season 2009/10, the Victoria Cup was originally to be held in 2010 as compared with an NHL club with one of the masters of a top European league. However, the discharge did not take place and the future of the competition is unclear.

2008 edition

The first edition of the Victoria Cup was held at the PostFinance Arena in Bern on October 1, 2008. As the European representative took the winner of the IIHF European Champions Cup in 2008, the HK Metallurg Magnitogorsk, in part; the National Hockey League was represented by the New York Rangers. The winner received a prize of one million Swiss francs (approx. EUR 0.6 million ). It was the first meeting between a club of former Soviet Union and North America since the Super Series 1991. Thanks to an outstanding final third were the New York Rangers the game with 4:3 decide for themselves after they were behind half of the game with 0:3. Through a gate just before the end of the second period and three goals in the final section, they were the first to win the Victoria Cup. A total of 13,794 spectators attended the game.

The game was accompanied by a match between Switzerland and Russia's traditional teams on the day of the Cup game as well as a friendly match between the host SC Bern and the New York Rangers on 30 September 2008. The latter was the first game of a Swiss team against an NHL team. The Rangers also won this match before 16,022 spectators with 8:1. There, too, the decision was made only in the final period, as the Rangers six goals were achieved.

Winning team

The New York Rangers head coach Tom Renney to that prepared with the Victoria Cup to be held in Europe opening round of the National Hockey League, nominated a total of 26 players for the two matches. Among them were three goalkeepers, eight defenders, 15 forwards.

Discharge 2009

The second edition of the Victoria Cup was held on 29 September 2009 at the Hallenstadion in Zurich. As the European representative of the winner of the Champions Hockey League, the ZSC Lions Zurich took 2008/ 09, in part, the National Hockey League was represented by the Chicago Blackhawks.

Having a Swiss team was taken at one of the NHL last year in the form of SC Bern in advance of the actual Victoria Cup for the first time, it was 2009 again two such meeting since the day before the reigning Swiss champions HC Davos played against Chicago. This game won by the Blackhawks clearly with 9:2.

The match for the Victoria Cup started with an early goal for the visitors from Chicago, who went through defenders Cam Barker in the lead. Only a short time later Patrik Baertschi offset the encounter. Although the Blackhawks in the first and second third had a clear playful overweight, but the Lions went after 35 minutes through Luke Grauwiler who recovered a loose ball, 2-1 in front. Previously a woodwork had denied the lead. In the final third of Chicago pressed again, but weakened by unnecessary penalties itself just before the end forgave Lions player Baertschi a penalty shot. A total of 9,744 spectators attended the game.

Winning team

The ZSC Lions Zurich to head coach Sean Simpson nominated a total of 28 players for the game. Among them were two goalkeepers, defenders ten and 16 forwards.

With Patrik Baertschi, who scored the temporary equalizer, set the Lions also the Most Valuable Player of the encounter.
