Victoria Memorial (London)

The Victoria Memorial is a 26 m high, built in honor of Queen Victoria of Great Britain figure group in London from Laas marble; it is at the southwest end of the boulevard The Mall in front of the Buckingham Palace.

History

The 1911 Monument unveiled to the gilded goddess of victory, and placed under her allegorical female figures was designed by Sir Aston Webb and executed by the sculptor Thomas Brock. For the period beginning of the 20th century rather unfashionable, is the baroque, from 2,300 tonnes marble existing national monument still an impressive example of public works of art.

The monument was erected on a site on which stood in the middle ages mulberry trees for silkworm rearing. Because the breeding did not work as planned, was built on the property in 1703 a country house. 1763 bought the royal family which now already extended the house and let it expand to a royal palace, now Buckingham Palace.
