History

Already in 1716 was founded on the other side of the Mississippi River, the town of Natchez. After Natchez in 1798 sold by Spain to the United States, the Spanish officer Don José Vidal ( 1763-1823 ) asked for land west of the Mississippi River. He received land there to build a fortified fort on condition. Vidal and his family moved into the fort and was commander of the outpost Concord.

Napoleon I of Spain in 1800 acquired the land back. 1803, the area was sold to the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase from France.

Near the later city area found in 1827 on a sandbar James Bowie's famous " Sandbar Fight" instead.

In 1870 the city was founded in the area around the old fort and named after Vidal.
