Vidarabine ( araA ), an isomer of the nucleoside and is structurally related to adenosine with fludarabine. It consists of a furanose (sugar ) and the adenine. It contains - in contrast to most nucleosides - instead of the β -D - ribofuranose the β -D - arabinofuranose and thus belongs to the group of Arabinosylnukleoside.

Properties

After phosphorylation to Vidarabine triphosphate to inhibit the DNA polymerase in the cells. It thus acts cytotoxic.

Use

Vidarabine was originally an antineoplastic agent and as ganciclovir used as an antiviral agent in severe forms of herpes simplex and varicella- zoster virus. Meanwhile, it has but it declined in importance because the acyclovir later developed acts safer. It can be administered intravenously as well as locally in the form of ointment (3% vidarabine ) were used.
