Video Disk Recorder

Video Disk Recorder ( VDR) is a free software for the Linux operating system. With the VDR you have the opportunity to use a computer as a digital video recorder.

Concept

The VDR is a collection of programs on Linux, which were originally developed for some active DVB cards with video output (Full - Featured).

Requires was to first a PC with 166 MHz and a digital (Full - Featured) TV Card (DVB- card) for satellite, terrestrial or cable reception.

The main difference to other programs that enable TV reception on the PC, was that the possibilities of active DVB card (Full - Featured) can be used consistently. The image output is then directly from the DVB card as a VIDEO signal to the TV and not, as in other systems, a graphics card.

By means of a normal IR remote control by a VDR system is fully controllable via the OSD menu.

From the ability to television and radio on a VDR system to receive and store programs on a hard drive, it is a hard disk recorder (PVR) with the advanced capabilities of a PC.

Additional features such as DVD players, MP3 players, IPTV and web radio can be integrated with a host of plug-ins in the VDR system.

Architecture

All software of the VDR is designed under Linux on the client -server model, allowing many more capture cards can be used for TV reception in the server of the VDR today.

Only to play a powerful graphics card or TV card with MPEG hardware decoding and optionally video output is required in the client.

From VDR television programs can be used as IP stream into a network. Alternatively, can then be performed by an Internet browser, program selection and programming of the TV shows and the VLC Media Player can be used for television reception.

The Reelbox is constructed on the principle of the VDR.

Functions

The Video Disk Recorder and its plugins provide among others the following functions:
