Vido Musso

Vido Musso William ( born January 13, 1913 in Carrini, Sicily, † January 9, 1982 in Rancho Mirage, California ) was an American tenor saxophonist, clarinetist and bandleader of the swing and modern jazz.

Life and work

Vido Musso is best known for his work in the big bands of Benny Goodman, Gene Krupa, Tommy Dorsey, Harry James, Stan Kenton and Woody Herman.

A native of Sicily Musso came with his family in 1920 in the United States and grew up in Detroit. In 1930 he went to Los Angeles. His first instrument was the clarinet before switching to tenor saxophone. Already in 1930 his collaboration began with Stan Kenton, he also played in the orchestras of Teddy Wilson, with whom he accompanied, among others, Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman At Musso worked from 1936 to 1938, with Gene Krupa and Harry James 1940-41 1938. He then worked again for Goodman, then for Bunny Berigan and 1942 for Woody Herman. In 1945, he briefly played with Tommy Dorsey, and André Previn. He then founded his own formation, but the level is unsuccessful. The most important phase of his career were the years of work in the Stan Kenton Orchestra from 1945 to 1947, as his participation in the title " Come Back to Sorrento". He then worked as a freelance musician and arranger on the west coast, 1957 in Las Vegas. Under his own name emerged in 1946 four tracks for Savoy Records, 1952 three titles for Fantasy Records.
