Vienna City Marathon
The Vienna City Marathon ( to 1993 Spring Marathon Vienna ) is the largest marathon in Austria and has been held since 1984 every year in spring in Vienna. In addition to the 42,195 - km route also a half marathon and a marathon relay will be offered.
The route begins at the Vienna International Centre, crosses at the Empire Bridge and the Danube via the Prater Stern in the Vienna Prater, on the left bank of the Danube Canal to Sweden bridge and at the Urania one on the ring road. At the State Opera, she leaves the ring road that leads over the left line to Vienna Schonbrunn Palace, and on the Mariahilferstraße back to the ring road. The half marathoners turn now into the goal on the Heldenplatz, during the sightseeing tour continues in shorts for the marathon runners. The route takes you past the town hall, then in the Alsergrund, there on the peace bridge they crossed the Danube Canal and continue along the left bank of the Danube Canal and reached a second time the Prater. After another round Prater at the Ernst Happel Stadium and at the summer house, we hike along Franzensbrückenstraße again on the ring road all the way to the Heroes' Square.
In 1987 played with Geri Winkler for the first time an insulin-dependent diabetics successfully run a marathon.
Six Austrian marathon records were set throughout history at this event - three of Gerhard Hartmann ( 1984, 1985 and 1986) and one each by Dagmar Rabenstein ( 2:35:42, 2002), Susanne Pumper ( 2:32:21, 2006) and Andrea Mayr ( 2:30:43, 2009).
