Vienne Cathedral

The church of Saint -Maurice in Vienne is the cathedral of the former diocese of Vienne, which was first mentioned in 314 and repealed in 1790. Until then, the church was the same as the seat of the Primate " of Seven ( churches ) provinces " ( Aix, too, Bordeaux, Bourges, Embrun, Narbonne and Vienne) the main cathedral of southern France. History

The various cathedrals of Vienne were all in the same place, by the monuments from the period before the 10th century, however, no traces have been preserved, as was done in the period from 1030 to 1070, the term of office of the Archbishop Léger, a complete new building. The present church was built from 1130 in Romanesque style. From this period parts of the nave between the 5th and 11th sheet. From 1802 services were held again, two associated monasteries and chapels were, however, 1803-1804 demolished to make way for urban development. Around the same time the archbishop's palace was destroyed. 1869 burned from the northern tower.
