Viersen sculpture collection

The sculpture collection Viersen is one of the major contemporary sculpture parks in Germany.

History, meaning and art

For a donation of the emigrant from Viersen to the U.S. citizen William Pohl to the Viersener home club as well as from donations and money from the Foundation for Art and Culture of the Land NRW emerged in the last 20 years around the Städtische Galerie im Park in the county town of Viersen a unique collection of sculptures have involved the participation of renowned artists with partly complex works. In 1992, when the 1986/87 constructed five-part, nearly 12 meters high steel sculpture New Star was built by the American artist Mark di Suvero on the Diergardtplatz, rose in letters a storm of protest by local citizens against this loan; many could not do anything with this abstract and modern art. A special attraction of this collection is the bronze spine - the articulated column of the British visual artist Anthony Cragg (1996 ), who had designed these specifically for Viersen. The first sculpture was erected in 1989 Monument from the Eifel basalt of the Düsseldorf art professor Heerich ( 1922-2004 ).
