Vigeois

Vigeois ( Occitan Visoas ) is a commune in the Corrèze département on the western edge of the Massif Central. The municipality is a member of the Association of Municipalities Communauté de communes des trois A: A20, A89 et Avenir. The inhabitants call themselves Vigeoyeux (ses ).

Geography

Tulle, prefecture of the department is located, about 30 kilometers south-east, Brive- la -Gaillarde approximately 35 kilometers south and slightly Uzerche approximately 8 kilometers north-east. The municipality is crossed by the Vézère and their tributaries Brézou and Loyre.

Neighboring communities of Vigeois are Saint- Ybard and Uzerche in the north, Perpezac -le- Noir in the Southeast, Saint -Bonnet- l'Enfantier to the southeast, and Estivaux Orgnac -sur -Vézère in the south, Troche in the west and Saint -Martin- Sepert in northwest.

Traffic

The junction 45 to the A20 Motorway is located approximately five kilometers north-east. In the center of the town is the train station, which is a stop on the line Orléans -Montauban.

History

Finds from the Neolithic period, dating from the 3rd century BC, and again finds from the Gallo-Roman period through to the first mention of a religious community founded in the 6th century, 572 by Aredius of Limoges, occupy a long ununterbrochende settlement history of the area to Vigeois. The name of the time was still VOSIA until the 16th century, the name changed in Vigeas to later accept the present form. Of course, this abbey, like all the other also suffered, among the medieval events such as looting, robbery and arson by the local gentry. Nevertheless existed since 1082, with the help of the Abbey of Saint -Martial de Limoges, an internal firm organization, including quite a number of offshoots of the Abbey in other places as well since the 12th century a library. A large part of this was Geoffroy du Breuil, also called Geoffroy de Vigeois, Prior of the Abbey of Saint -Pierre of Vigeois. He wrote there a chronicle of the medieval through the Limousin and the first Crusades. Also during the old clive War and the Wars of the monastery was repeatedly looted and burned. In the 17th century, the monastery life limp in Vigeois and the Abbey joined the Benedictines. The monastery buildings disappeared after the French Revolution, was left only the abbey church. With the construction of the railway line Paris -Toulouse 1882-1892 Vigeois be significantly developed (1886, the place had about 4000 inhabitants), there arose in the area of the station a new commercial center for the region.
