Viking Line

Viking Line is a Finnish shipping company headquartered in Åland, which operates seven ferries in regular service on the Baltic Sea, between Estonia, Finland and Sweden.

The company in 1959 as Rederi Ab Ålandsfärjan (later SF Line) in Mariehamn / Åland founded has carried more than 6.3 million passengers in fiscal year 2009 /2010. The number of employees (as of 2006) is 2900, of which 730 on land.

The hitherto most advanced ship in the fleet is built at Aker Yards in Turku, Finland Viking Grace, currently between Turku ( Finland ) and Stockholm ( Sweden) wrong. The contract for the building was issued on 22 December 2010. The ship has a gross tonnage of 57,000, is 218 meters long and is equipped with 880 cabins for 2800 passengers. The delivery was in January 2013. The new vessel used LNG as fuel.

The Rosella was converted to mid-February 2011 in order to increase comfort and capacity. The conversion is the use of the ship on the short distance Kapellskar - secure Mariehamn on.

Overall, Viking Line has already had over 50 different ferries in service, including the Viking Sally ( 1980-1990 owned by Viking Line ), whose demise in 1994 as Estonia was the biggest maritime disaster of the postwar European history.

Another notable ship is the Silja Europa, the largest of its time ferry in the world, which was given by a shipping company ( Viking Line ) in order. To a takeover of some even painted already in Viking Line colors ferry but not issued, since the 1992 falling exchange rate of the Swedish krona suddenly more expensive the ship around 500 million Swedish crowns, and the money could not be raised.
