Viktor Mayer-Schönberger

Viktor Mayer- Schönberger (born 1966 in Zell am See) is an Austrian lawyer, university professor and author.

Life

The son of a cinema owner was born 1966 in Zell am See. After attending elementary school and a federal secondary school in his birthplace, he studied seven semesters law at the University of Salzburg. During this time he was already successful in the International Physics Olympiad and the Austrian competition for young programmers. After a Master's degree at Harvard Law School, he received his doctorate in 1991 in Salzburg for the Doctor of Law. In London in 1992 he graduated as a Master of Science from the London School of Economics and Political Science.

In 1986 he founded the software company Icarus with development focus in data security, and developed Virus Utilities, one of the best selling Austrian software products. In 1992 he sold the company. Then he led for two years the tax consulting firm of his father.

From 1994 onwards, Mayer- Schönberger worked at the Austrian Institute for European Law and Politics in Salzburg, where he led the project information law, and in 1996 as an assistant at the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna. In 1999 he became a professor at the Harvard Kennedy School. The habilitation he reached in 2001 at the University of Graz.

Currently, Mayer- Schönberger at the Oxford Internet Institute operates. He advises, among other companies, governments and international organizations.

Mayer- Schönberger promotes the right to be forgotten. Currently, he is concerned with the social consequences of the use of Big Data.
