Viktor Oskar Tilgner

Viktor Oskar Tilgner ( born October 25, 1844 in Bratislava, † April 16, 1896 in Vienna ) was an Austrian sculptor and portraitist. He is the principal representative of the neo-baroque within the plastic of the Vienna Ringstrasse.

Life

Victor Tilgner was born as the son of captain Carl and Ida Tilgner in Bratislava, but moved as a child to Vienna and has since been connected with this city. His interest and talent was recognized by the sculptor Franz Schönthaler Very early, which was also his first teacher.

At the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, he first began to study with Franz Bauer, but soon moved to the Tyrolean sculptor Josef Gasser, of the " baroque " interest aroused by its proximity to Saint sculptures in Tilgner and introduced him to the practical work. Parallel led him the medalist Joseph Daniel Boehm in the art of Ziselierens one.

Viktor Tilgner realistic academicism was influenced by Hans Makart, a leading painter of the Ringstrasse era, with whom he also toured Italy in 1874. In addition, the sculptor had contact with Johann Strauss and belonged to the circle of artists around Karl Graf Lanckoronski. Strongly influenced he was most recently the French sculptor Jean -Baptiste Gustave Deloye, who came in 1873 at the World Exhibition in Vienna.

Viktor Tilgner had over the last 20 years of life his studio in a formerly used as a greenhouse side wing of the Palais Schwarzenberg, Heugasse 1 (today: Prinz-Eugen -Straße 1 ), Vienna Highway; the artist's apartment was located closest to Wohllebengasse 1, Vienna - Wieden.

Tilgner, who had lingered despite a quite some time felt -making heart disease the day before his death in the building works at the Mozart monument, died the morning of April 16, 1896 in his apartment a heartbeat. One day after the death was met by doctors with the needs expressed by the deceased during his lifetime for the case of a sudden death wish for a heart down. On April 18, 1896 after the first blessing in the ( crowded ) Charles Church, the funeral procession made ​​a stop at the Vienna Künstlerhaus, where its officers talked Julius Deininger ( 1852-1924 ) and Rudolf Weyr ( 1847-1914 ), the sculptor Club, parting words, then Viktor Tilgner, was buried in the presence of the widow, Marianne, and the brother, Oskar in a grave of honor in Vienna's central cemetery. On October 3, 1897 Tilgner was in the Viennese central cemetery in a grave of honor in a silent way reburied (Group 14 A, number 28). The set on this occasion grave monument was commissioned by the widow of the employees of Tilgner studio as their last work commissioned by the deceased and had a once -made sketch based.

Works

The Statue of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in Vienna's Burg Garden considered the main work Tilgner and was also its last. She was originally created for the square in front of the Albertina. The moving putti at the base, representing the power of Mozart 's music, interpreted stylistically already points to the Art Nouveau style. It was revealed a few days after Tilgner death.

His later work included architectural sculptures for the imperial museums, the Burgtheater, the Neue Hofburg, and the Hermes Villa and several wells ( Tilgner - fountain in the public garden, 1877), Monuments ( werndl monument in Steyr, 1894) and some grave monuments. He was also known for his portrait busts (including Pedro Calderón de la Barca, Shakespeare, Molière, Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, Friedrich Hebbel, Grillparzer and Friedrich Halm for the Burgtheater ) and many medallions.

The bulk of the estate of Tilgner went to his hometown and is now on display at the City Gallery of Bratislava. His works adorn all important buildings of the Ringstrasse in Vienna and other places.
