Viktor Sarianidi

Viktor Ivanovich Sarianidi (Russian Виктор Иванович Сарианиди, scientific transliteration Viktor Ivanovich Sarianidi; born September 23, 1929 in Tashkent, † December 23, 2013 ) was a Soviet and Russian prehistory of Greek descent.

Life

Sarianidi studied at the University of Tashkent archeology and graduated in 1952. Since 1959 he worked at the Institute of Archaeology of the Russian Academy of Science. In 1963, he completed a doctorate on the subject of " agricultural driving tribes Südostturkmeniens " In 1976 he was awarded for the work " Afghanistan in the Bronze Age and the early Iron Age ," the lecturer title.

He gained worldwide fame in 1978 with the discovery of the Bactrian gold treasures of Tilla Tepe in northern Afghanistan, one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th century. Sarianidi also discovered traces of an ancient civilization, the so-called oasis culture in the Karakum desert.
