Template: Infobox city in Portugal / Maintenance / Web page is blank Vila do Bispo is a small town ( Vila ) in the Algarve in the south-west Portugal. It is the seat of an eponymous district ( concelho ) with 5275 inhabitants (as at 30 June 2011). Vila do Bispo (German: small town of Bishop ) is located in the Parque Natural do Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentina, a nature reserve which runs along the entire south-western coast of Portugal. In addition to the sandy beaches especially the Parish of Sagres has become known.
History
The traces of human settlement in the district lead back to the Neolithic period. Romans lived here later. With the Arab conquest from 711 here settled the Moors and introduced advanced techniques in agriculture and fisheries.
The first Portuguese documents about the former village of Santa Maria do Cabo date from the 14th century, including a decree of King Alfonso IV from 1353rd The town was the beginning of the 16th century by King Manuel I to the Bishop of Faro given and received in the context of the name Aldeia do Bispo (Portuguese for: Village of the bishop). In 1662 King Pedro II made the city the seat of its own circle, and elevated him to the small town ( Vila ). Since then, the city takes its present name.
