The city

History

The Romans founded on a hill high above the river a fort. The area was later settled by the Celts. First records of the city as the "City of the Count " ( = Vila do Conde ) 953 in Dom Sancho she gave in 1209 his royal mistress ribeirinha (Dona Maria Paes Ribeira ).

In 1500 was raised Vila do Conde by King Manuel I to Vila ( town ); in 1988 to the city ( Cidade ).

In the 15th and 16th centuries, the city had a major port and major shipyards.

Sights and culture

At the site of the former Roman fort and probably the later ducal castle today is the Mosteiro de Santa Clara, a former Carmelite convent. At the apse of the monastery 7 km long ends, built on 999 arches aqueduct leading from Terroso in the mountains near Póvoa de Varzim here and is still in very good condition for long stretches.

In the city center, the market, the parish church Igreja Matriz de São João Baptista is (St. John the Baptist ). The left aisle is flanked by the mighty, wide bell tower. About cruciform plan with side apses and battlements the church from 1500/1514 was built.

Outside the church is a Pelourinho ( pillory ) with twisted column shaft and announces to the arm of justice at the top of the column by the power of the state.

Nearby is a small chapel with tiles decorated facade to the public. About six kilometers east of Vila do Conde, near the village of Vila Fria, are the hermit caves of Sabariz.

Since 1993, the annual short film festival Curtas Vila do Conde takes place here that has now grown to a music, art and culture festival.

The building, designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira bank building Borges e Irmão received the 1988 Mies van der Rohe Award for European Architecture.

Sports

Vila do Conde is the home of the football club Rio Ave FC, which plays in the Portuguese Super League ( first division ).
