Vila Nova de Gaia [ vilɐ nɔvɐ dɯ ɡaiɐ ], or shortly Gaia, is a city in Portugal. It lies on the Rio Douro Porto across the street on the shore. Vila Nova de Gaia is the center of Port wine production.

The waterfront promenades, bars and restaurants on the Cais de Gaia, in addition to the port wine cellars, the most important tourist destination Vila Nova de Gaia.

History

In 1255 the settlement of Vila de Gaia by an edict of King Alfonso III was. first mentioned. 1288 a settlement called Vila Nova de Rei was mentioned, was left of the later only the part of the name Vila Nova. The Edict of King Manuel I in 1518 gave the places Vila Nova Gaia e self-government rights. In the 18th century the place of port wine production developed by the settlement of foreign traders as part of a fast-growing settlement of seafarers, craftsmen and businessmen. On 20 June 1834 united the two places to the still valid municipal Vila Nova de Gaia. By edict of Queen Mary II of Vila Nova de Gaia received its town charter in 1841.

Important economic factor in Vila Nova de Gaia, the vast halls of the Port Wine producers on the south bank of the Douro, where the port wine matures years to decades. Tourism has become increasingly important, particularly in the Port wine cellars and the developed waterfront.
