History
The Anta de Pendilhe and other megalithic sites occupy a prehistoric settlement. Later rock tombs show the existence of today's village since the 7th century AD Since at least the 11th century AD there was here an independent municipality. The place was called Vila de Barrelas and belonged to the circle Fráguas until he became in 1883 the seat of the circle. In the wake of both the county and the city was given its present name, referring to the situation on the Paiva, a river that flows near Castelo de Paiva in the Douro.

The village lies on the national road N329, which passes south at Sátão in the N229. Capital of the district of Viseu and its connections to the A25 motorway (also European Route 80) and the A24 are in walking about 30km south. The smaller N323 results in about the same length of the route there.
Vila Nova de Paiva is integrated into the national bus network of speech Expressos.
